Ovulation

Definition

Ovulation is the monthly release of a mature egg from an ovarian follicle. It is the central event of the menstrual cycle and the primary trigger for the production of progesterone.

In Depth

Ovulation is the physiological lynchpin of the female reproductive cycle. Triggered by a sharp surge in Luteinizing Hormone (LH), a mature follicle ruptures, releasing an egg into the fallopian tube. Crucially, the remaining empty follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, which acts as a temporary endocrine gland that produces large quantities of progesterone.

In the context of the menopause transition, ovulation becomes the first reliable casualty. During early perimenopause, the ovaries begin to miss cycles—a phenomenon known as "anovulation." When a woman has an anovulatory cycle, she does not produce the surge of progesterone that usually follows ovulation. This results in an "unopposed" estrogen environment, which often causes the heavy, painful periods and increased anxiety typical of early perimenopause.

Because progesterone is a "neurological sedative," the loss of regular ovulation directly impacts a woman's sleep and mood. Furthermore, as ovulation becomes more erratic, the timing of the menstrual cycle shifts, leading to the shortened cycles (e.g., 24 days instead of 28) that many women first notice as a sign that the transition has begun. Understanding ovulation moving past its reproductive utility to its role as a "progesterone factory" is key to understanding the symptoms of perimenopause.

Why It Matters

Ovulation is the primary source of the body's natural progesterone. Its decline during perimenopause is the direct cause of cycle irregularity and many of the "low progesterone" symptoms like anxiety and insomnia.
