Throughout life, bone is constantly being remodeled—old bone is broken down (bone resorption) and new bone is formed (bone formation).
Estrogen plays a vital role in maintaining bone density by slowing down bone resorption and promoting bone formation. During perimenopause and after menopause, the significant decline in estrogen levels disrupts this delicate balance. Bone resorption begins to outpace bone formation, leading to a gradual loss of bone density. This accelerated bone loss is most pronounced in the first few years after menopause and can significantly increase the risk of fractures.
